Dear Councillors, Some of you will know me but many of you will not. I have emailed you in the past regarding a community lead solution to the housing crisis in my own ward where I hope to demonstrate how the right type of planning can give the community the benefit it deserves and provide quality housing stock for future generations. At the heart of our plan is the building of a state of the art music school for BYMT as well as introducing community parking and road safety improvements. In my last email I explained that the Principal of BYMT Ian Rowe, his staff and the board of trustees are fully in support of this idea even though it would mean reclassifying a soon to be redundant farmer's field as building land. Please see the support that we are receiving https://www.change.org/p/bromley-council-bymt-building-support-bymt-free-building I have also attached the full list of signatures thus far. Although nimbys can make a disproportionate amount of noise the vast majority of the wider public would support sensible sustainable development, especially where such a well respected institution such as BYMT will be a major beneficiary. It has come to my attention that rather than wait for the due democratic process to take place, certain councillors are already saying that they will never let this happen! I find this rather strange as the call for site process is still underway and has yet to be made public by the council or found sound by a planning inspector. This makes me suspicious of an orchestrated campaign by certain individuals with a personal agenda out of touch with the wider public, I hope however that I am wrong. If not then the route of a planning application now with the decision being made by a planning inspector might be our only other option. Personally I would much rather work in a constructive manner alongside the local planning authority and with full public participation. I have attached a document that will be put in front of the next development control committee claiming that Bromley will meet it's housing targets for the next five years. I have written to the publisher disputing the findings as the last document was only presented in September 2014 and confirmed the same yet with a much lower housing target of 500 set by the council. Since then the target has been increased to a MINUMUM of 641 homes a year by Boris Johnson as part of the wider London Plan. There is therefore no way that within two months of the new targets coming in to effect that another 705 homes have been or are going to be granted consent without considering suggestions such as ours. Looking back historically I notice that the same publisher has come to the same conclusion each time these figure are compiled. It is no wonder that we as a country have created a housing crisis and that it is going to take a generation to address. People that have buried their heads in the sand or those that say we have a people crisis not a housing crisis are not helping solve the problem. The only solution is to build more homes. However my greatest fear is that in an attempt to reach numbers quickly we start building tower blocks once again as we did in the 1960's and 1970's. Most of these are now being demolished whilst the Victorian and 1930's built family homes with gardens should have taught us a lesson by now. We need to build the right type of homes in the right places and right now. Delaying the inevitable will only worsen the crisis in years to come. I hope to appeal to those free thinking local members that might, like me, be prepared to say enough is enough and start challenging why Bromley are resisting building these much needed new homes. I am not just talking about executive detached homes but across the spectrum for instance for, first time buyers, social tenants, aspirational self builders and existing local residents wishing to move to a low maintenance new home in a pleasant location. We as a borough have spent the last 20 years cramming full our brownfield sites with high density poor quality homes with little or no environmental benefit. The argument of future housing figures matching historical figures is also fundamentally flawed. Land is not made any more and brownfield land is a reducing commodity. If you are a member of development control committee I trust that you will be seeking to establish the facts behind this latest five year housing supply document and if you have not been convinced, like myself, that you suggest deferring the adoption or even abstain from voting in favour. All that I ask is for you to question if we are getting it right on housing? I would also be grateful if one of you were kind enough to forward my email to Cllr. Colin Smith as he has blocked me and refuses to enter in to any further dialogue! Kind regards Adrian Lawrence Lanniston Developments Limited
