Broken homes in Ivory Coast

Broken homes in Ivory Coast
The Issue
Petition to Urgently Review Demolition Practices and Prioritize Resettlement in Abidjan
Introduction
We, the undersigned residents of Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, are deeply concerned about the recent wave of demolitions and evictions carried out by the government. These actions have displaced thousands of people, leaving them without homes and livelihoods. We urge the government to review its demolition practices and find a more humane solution to the problem of unregulated settlements.
Background
As referenced in a recent Washington Post article [Washington Post, April 17, 2024], thousands of residents in Abidjan have been forcibly evicted from their homes due to government-sanctioned demolitions targeting unregulated settlements. These demolitions have caused immense hardship, disrupting families and communities.
Demands
We demand the following:
-A transparent and inclusive dialogue between the government, residents of unregulated settlements, and civil society organizations to develop a plan for the future of these communities.
-The development of a comprehensive plan to provide safe and affordable housing for all residents of Abidjan.
We believe that everyone has the right to safe and secure housing. The government's current approach to unregulated settlements is not only inhumane but also unsustainable. We urge the government to work with residents to find a solution that respects their rights and dignity.
Call to Action
We urge all citizens of the world to sign this petition and to add their voices to our call for an end to these unjust evictions. We also call on the international community to put pressure on the Ivorian government to respect the human rights of its citizens.
Together, we can make a difference.

Peace be unto you.
