The Issue

Corruption has no place at Brock University. Yet right now, the Student Union is abusing its power to silence reform-minded student leaders, punish those who challenge insiders, and entrench a culture of self-interest over accountability. This is not a misunderstanding. This is systemic corruption embedded in student governance.

On September 18, seven directors of the Brock University Student Union voted to remove Omar Rasheed as Chair of the Board without just cause. Omar is a respected student leader and the President of the Muslim Students Association. He was elected Chair in May by a clear majority (7–3). His removal was carried out without warning, without due process, and without any agenda item authorizing it. This makes the removal illegitimate under any fair standard of governance.

Omar was not removed because of incompetence or misconduct. He was removed because he stood for reform. He challenged the culture of secrecy, waste, and insider privilege that dominates BUSU. He wanted the union to serve students, not executives. That is why Tomas Oviedo, Ian Bhimani, and their allies forced out reform-minded directors, rushed through a vote, and installed themselves into leadership positions.

This was not politics. It was a power grab. The rules were bent, directors were excluded, and the process was hijacked to protect entrenched interests.

And this is not an isolated case. For years, BUSU has operated as a closed circle — punishing critics, blocking reform, and rewarding loyalty over accountability. Omar’s removal is only the latest example of how corruption thrives when students who push for transparency are silenced and sidelined.

The Student Union exists to represent all students. When it manipulates procedure to remove elected leaders and silence reformers, it delegitimizes itself entirely. Brock University cannot ignore this. It is responsible for ensuring fairness, accountability, and integrity in student governance. To stay silent is to enable corruption.

Our demands are clear and attainable:

  1. A full and immediate investigation into these acts of misconduct by Brock University.
  2. The resignation of the seven directors whose actions violated both Brock and BUSU policies, followed by a by-election to restore accountability.
  3. A formal apology to Omar Rasheed and to all students who have been denied fair representation.
  4. Public accountability from Brock University administration for failing to enforce integrity in student governance.

This fight is not just about one student. It is about ending corruption at Brock University. It is about protecting the right of students to hold their union accountable. The administration’s silence and inaction are not neutrality. They are complicit in corruption.

Sign this petition to show that corruption and abuse of power will not rule our campus. Stand with Omar. Stand with reform. Stand with accountability. Stand for justice at Brock.
