Broaden the Federal Definition of Homelessness to Include 'Doubling Up'

The Issue

Speaking from personal experience, I understand the painful reality of having insecure housing conditions. I am one of many who find themselves in a living situation commonly referred to as 'doubling up'; living in another's residence due to the lack of alternatives. Currently, the Federal definition of homelessness does not acknowledge ‘doubling up’ as a form of homelessness, excluding us from the critical support necessary for our survival. A study from National Alliance to End Homelessness (NAEH) estimated that in the USA, as of 2019, 7.2 million people lived in doubled-up conditions due to economic hardship, equivalent to a population larger than the state of Indiana. Gracefully, we must expand the Federal definition of homelessness, to offer help to these hidden homeless citizens. Through the adaptation of this new inclusive definition, millions could potentially access much-needed services and aid, providing hope for a better future. Join us in this pressing issue, sign this petition, help five million people come out of the shadows.
