More horses have died at Cheltenham compared to any other race course, with 'hurdle' and 'chase' being the top two categories of highest death/injury rates.
Causes: crowded races, long distances to run, the use in demanding events of novice horses, stiff fences and challenging racing ground.
"Government intervention is essential, given that the regulatory authorities and racing as a whole show every sign of
being content with the equine attrition rate to be found at Cheltenham and other British courses" (Animal Aid, 2014).
In nature, horses will avoid jumping over things at all costs; "if they approached an obstacle that required jumping over... the horse's reaction would be to slow down, assess the obstacle" (RSPCA, 2017) and would never attempt to jump an obstacle at speed.
This petition calls to the British Horseracing Authority to make changes to the racecourses, to provide safer grounds, safer fences (or ban them completely), reduce distances in races, reduce number of runners in race, and remove dangerous race categories.
