British Columbian schools need black history to be a part of the curriculum

DISCLAIMER: DO NOT DONATE TO THIS PETITION. IT WONT GO TOWARDS THIS

This is a petition demanding the Ministry Of Education Of British Columbia to take action to include Black History in their school’s education system. But I do believe it should be considered to be added to all Canadian Schools.

Right now there is a petition that is also demanding the ministry of education of Ontario to take action to include black history in its curriculum. I believe it should be taught in all schools! Black history is a very important topic, and I don’t believe it’s being taught enough in our schools.

For me personally, I have never learned about black history in school until now. In my history 12 class, our final essay topic is about why history matters and racism. A lot of the information that was given, I was very unaware of. The information about the events that have happened to black people in the past shocked me. I cannot believe we were never taught about these horrific events that happened to black people. It horrifies me that they’re keeping this information away from our youth.

It is essential for youth to learn about the history of black people. We have learned about the holocaust, wars, natives, and many other things. But why do they leave out black history? If black history was taught in schools, I believe people being more educated about it would have a better understanding of it, and maybe support black people instead of being against them.

If black history was included to British Columbian schools’ curriculum, it will better benefit our next generation of youth. They will be more informed and self-aware of what has happened in our history and what is currently happening in our world right now towards black people.

We live in a multicultural country, so why are we not being taught about black history? Our youth needs to be educated enough to create a safe and accepting place for all.
