Britain Must Stand for Peace, Not War with Iran

Britain Must Stand for Peace, Not War with Iran
The Issue
Dear Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Honourable Members of the House of Commons,
We write as British citizens from across the political spectrum, united by a simple principle: Britain must not be drawn into another unlawful and escalating war.
The recent attack on Iran by the United States and Israel was undertaken without legal justification under international law. At the time, Iran was engaged in negotiations. Escalation at such a moment undermines diplomacy and increases the risk of a wider regional war.
The humanitarian consequences are already grave. Among the most shocking incidents is the bombing of a school in Minab, where 168 young girls were killed. The loss of children in any conflict is indefensible and demands urgent international scrutiny. Civilian casualties are rising, and displacement across the region is accelerating. A refugee crisis is already beginning to unfold and will inevitably affect Europe, including the United Kingdom.
Further escalation threatens global energy supplies, trade routes and economic stability, with direct consequences for British households already facing cost-of-living pressures. The British people do not wish to see the United Kingdom drawn into another war, and it would not serve the national interest for the country to become entangled in another open-ended war.
We therefore call on the Government to:
- Support an immediate cessation of hostilities affecting innocent civilians and civilian infrastructure, as an essential step toward a complete and enduring end to the war;
- Refuse the use of British bases, intelligence or resources to facilitate this war;
- Ensure Parliament has a full debate and vote before any UK involvement;
- Facilitate and support the establishment of humanitarian corridors, through recognised organisations such as the Red Cross, to ensure safe access to aid and protection for civilians.
- Suspend arms exports where there is a clear risk of misuse;
- Use Britain’s diplomatic influence to act as a mediator for de-escalation and renewed negotiations.
The United Kingdom should stand for international law, the protection of civilians, and a political solution — not another devastating war.
We urge the Government to act accordingly.
