Allow Uniformed Queensland Police Officers to March at Brisbane Pride

Allow Uniformed Queensland Police Officers to March at Brisbane Pride
The issue
The Committee of Brisbane Pride Inc has made the determination that Uniformed Queensland Police Officers will not be permitted to March in the 2021 Brisbane Pride event. It is our view that the decision to exclude this contingent does not reflect the views and opinions of the overwhelming majority of the Brisbane based LGBTQIASB+ community.
While we acknowledge the historical treatment of LGBTQIASB+ people, it is our contention that in 2021 The Queensland Police Service, for the vast Majority, support and defend our Community. We believe in the spirit of Pride which is acknowledging the past, remembering the sacrifices and creating a better tomorrow.
This decision takes a step backwards in relations with the Queensland Police and should not be allowed to happen. As a community organisation, we are requesting that the Brisbane Pride Inc board and committee engage the community, and understand that this decision does NOT represent our feelings, and to reverse this decision before more harm is caused.
It is incredibly unjust and ultimately maddening that the LGBTIQ+ police of today would be the ones who are punished for the actions of cisgender and heterosexual politicians, governments, and police from the past.
One of the key principles of pride is inclusivity, and it doesn’t feel inclusive when you’ve got a group of proud LGBTIQ+ people and allies being deliberately excluded.
We need to ensure all LGBTIQ+ folk, no matter what their occupation, are visible, connected and proud.
