Bring Ublado Calderon Home to De Soto, Kansas
The Issue
For about 20 years, Ublado Calderon was part of everyday life in De Soto, Kansas. The 67-year-old rode his bike around town daily, collecting cans, feeding stray cats and helping keep the streets tidy. Two weeks ago, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents detained him while he was out on that bike. He was later deported and dropped off in Cancun, Mexico.
According to his loved ones, he had no criminal record and no family in the U.S. Former co-workers say he has had heart problems, so neighbors are worried about his health. His attorney says he had tried to become a U.S. citizen, but the process was confusing and the costs were hard for him to manage.
Neighbors say the town feels different without him. "He was a very kind, genuine face. My kids were excited to see him every day," former neighbor Ashley Wilson told KMBC 9 News. Neighbor Sandra Calderon told KMBC, "I thought that was unfair, like why him, what did he do?"
ICE had not responded to KMBC's request for comment when the story ran, so the reason for his detention is still unclear.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) can review his case and consider humanitarian parole. This option can let a person come back to the U.S. for urgent humanitarian reasons. Kansas's members of Congress can help by asking DHS to take a fresh look at his case.
A 67-year-old man with heart problems should not have to start over in another country after two decades in De Soto. Sign the petition to ask DHS to review Ublado Calderon's case and give him a chance to come home.
