Bring the World Cup Back to Fed Square: Protect Australian Football Culture

Bring the World Cup Back to Fed Square: Protect Australian Football Culture
The issue
In 2022, the scenes of pure, unbridled joy at Federation Square didn’t just define Melbourne—they defined Australian football.
The images of thousands of passionate supporters at 3:00 AM were broadcast to the globe, showcasing the vibrant, passionate, and inclusive heart of our sporting culture.
Now, the Victorian Government has decided not to host a 2026 FIFA World Cup live site at Federation Square.
This is not just a local logistical decision; it is a direct blow to Australian fan culture. Federation Square has long served as the civic gathering place for major sporting milestones.
Removing it denies locals, interstate visitors, and traveling fans a vital opportunity to participate in a truly global moment.
When football culture is sidelined in one of our major cities, it diminishes the standing of the game across the entire country.
A dedicated live site at Federation Square would:
Unite the football community: Provide a safe, inclusive space for fans from all backgrounds and allegiances to celebrate the world’s game together.
Ensure accessibility for all fans: Offer a free, public viewing option so that everyone—not just those who can afford expensive venues or premium broadcasting subscriptions—can be part of the World Cup experience.
Protect our global reputation: Continue to showcase Australian football fans as vibrant, engaged, and internationally connected.
Support local businesses: Drive massive foot traffic and economic activity in the CBD during the tournament period.
At a time when major cities across the world are embracing large-scale live sites to unite their communities, Australia cannot afford to fall behind. Shutting down our most iconic live site risks diminishing our standing as a premier destination for global sport.
We, the undersigned football supporters from all across Australia, call on the Victorian Government to:
Reconsider this decision and commit to hosting a 2026 FIFA World Cup live site at Federation Square, OR
Provide an equivalent, centrally located public viewing experience that reflects Melbourne’s status as an iconic city with intrinsic links to global sport.
Australian football fans deserve the chance to come together, celebrate, and share in one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
