Bring Shymel Curry Home After 29 Years of incarceration

Bring Shymel Curry Home After 29 Years of incarceration
The Issue
Shymel Curry has spent nearly 29 years in prison serving a 50-years-to-life sentence for a crime that occurred when he was just 19 years old. He did not pull the trigger and did not possess a weapon, yet he has spent almost three decades incarcerated. During his time in prison, Shymel has transformed his life. He recently earned an Associate Degree in Social Science and works in prison programs that help others choose alternatives to drugs and violence. Instead of spreading harm, he now works to spread hope, mentorship, and growth. Shymel is also preparing to give back to his community. Upon release, he plans to help build a community center in Troy, New York, focused on mentorship and support for youth. He also has a job opportunity with the SNUG violence interruption program, helping stop violence before it starts. Shymel is also a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His family—including a 16-year-old daughter—is waiting for him to come home. People grow. People mature. People change. Our justice system should recognize rehabilitation and redemption. Across New York, thousands of individuals remain incarcerated under sentences imposed during the tough-on-crime era, even after demonstrating decades of transformation. After 29 years, Shymel Curry deserves a meaningful review and the opportunity to return home. Sign this petition to support justice, redemption, and second chances. “29 years is punishment enough. Justice now calls for mercy, redemption, and the chance to come home.”
