With support from the surrounding lacrosse community, Athletic Directors, Stan Lewis (Normal West), Nic Kearfott (Normal Community), and Tony Bauman (Bloomington) will be proposing the addition of Boy’s and Girl’s High School Cooperative Lacrosse Teams for the 2019 Spring season. The proposal will be presented to the Unit 5 and District 87 Board of Educations during an upcoming meeting for approval.

The time is right!  The addition of lacrosse as a high school sport builds on the IHSA mission of offering a wide range of participation opportunities for high school students in Illinois.  Competitive lacrosse in Illinois for high school aged players has made a significant transformation from a club sport to a high school sport over the past several years. The number of Illinois high school lacrosse teams has skyrocketed to 163 teams with more expected to file paperwork before the 2/1/19 deadline to play in the Spring 2019 season. 

Lacrosse provides an athletic opportunity for any student of any skill level with a desire to play and complements existing sports programs.  It offers greater competition to expose players to college programs.   With more visibility around the sport, more local players may get that chance.

The Friends of Bloomington-Normal Lacrosse is comprised of nearly 300 active parents and volunteers committed to the success of the program.  The teams will be self-funded by participation fees, private donations, fundraising events and corporate sponsorships.

In order to increase the playing opportunities and facilitate the scheduling of games, the sport needs to be recognized by Unit 5 and District 87 as a varsity sport.  Our student-athletes have earned the opportunity to compete at the highest level and play for their schools.  

If you support high school athletics and would like your local high school to get involved and allow students to participate in the state's newest sanctioned sport, please sign our petition to let your school's principal and the Unit 5 and District 87 School Boards know that they should encourage more student athletes and join with the fastest growing sport in the country.
