The Issue
For more than 30 years, Jerry Walker has lived behind federal prison walls. Following his conviction for non-violent federal drug offenses arising from a case in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Jerry was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Jerry does not ask us to erase his past or ignore the choices that brought him to prison. He acknowledges those choices and the consequences they created for himself, his family, and his community. He is asking for a second chance.
More Than 30 Years Later
The Jerry Walker asking to come home today is not the same man who entered federal custody more than three decades ago. During his incarceration, Jerry has committed himself to education, personal development and rehabilitation. His records document years of participation in educational, rehabilitative and self-improvement programming designed to prepare him for a productive life.
Today, his family, friends and a growing community of supporters are asking that his case be considered again.
A Family Is Waiting for Him
Jerry is more than a federal inmate number. He is a father, son, family member and friend. His family remembers a man who brought people together, including the Sunday dinners Jerry prepared for family and friends. Everyone was welcome. His request was simple: just be on time. More than 30 years later, there is still a place for Jerry at that table.
Jerry would be returning to people prepared to help him successfully make the difficult transition from more than three decades of incarceration back into society. His supporters are developing a structured reentry plan focused on stable housing, employment, family support, mentorship, community involvement and long-term successful reintegration.
Rehabilitation Should Matter
Jerry has had more than 30 years to reflect on the decisions that changed the course of his life. We believe accountability and mercy can exist at the same time.
We are not asking anyone to forget Jerry’s past. We are asking that his transformation count. We are asking that rehabilitation count. We are asking that more than 30 years count. And we are asking that Jerry be given the opportunity to use what he has learned to serve his family and community, including helping younger generations understand the very real consequences of choices that can alter an entire life.
Our Request
We, the undersigned, respectfully ask the President of the United States to review Jerry Walker’s case, his more than 30 years of incarceration, his rehabilitation, his family and community support, and his plans for successful reentry—and to commute his remaining life sentence so that Jerry may have the opportunity to return home.
This petition is not asking that Jerry’s past be erased. It is asking that his future remain possible.
