Bring Grangemouth Refinery into Public Ownership

The Issue

For over a century, the Grangemouth refinery has been a cornerstone of Scotland’s economy and energy infrastructure. Today the site stands as Scotland’s only oil refinery, playing a critical role in ensuring energy security, contributing 4% to Scotland’s GDP, and providing hundreds of high-skilled jobs.  But with the recent announcement that the refinery will close in 2025, we face potential devastation: 400 workers will face unemployment, thousands more will be affected throughout the supply chain, communities will be destabilised, and hopes for a just transition to green industries will be jeopardized.

We CANNOT afford this closure.

Grangemouth is a major employer of local residents; its closure would send shockwaves throughout the community. The impact would reverberate through the local shops, pubs, restaurants, hotels, and businesses, hitting the local economy hard. However, the effects won’t stop there – they will be felt across all of Scotland and even the entire UK. If Scotland no longer refines oil, our energy security will be at risk, and with that, our national security will be compromised.

We Need Action NOW.

We cannot allow private and foreign interests to have such great influence over our critical industries and energy infrastructure. The Grangemouth site must be nationalised to protect jobs, fortify industry, and allow for a truly just transition to sustainable alternatives. It’s time to put people, communities, and the country before corporate profits.

Sign this petition to say that Grangemouth’s future is as vital as its past. We are calling on both the UK and Scottish Governments to:

  • Conduct a thorough assessment to evaluate the need for nationalisation of the Grangemouth site to safeguard jobs, protect energy security and ensure a Just Transition to greener industries.
  • Act without delay to ensure that the workers and community of Grangemouth are supported and that the transition to new, sustainable industries occurs without loss of employment or industrial capacity.
  • Recognise the pivotal role of the Grangemouth site for Scotland’s economy and our energy infrastructure.

We must stand together to Keep Grangemouth Working! Please add your voice to this crucial conversation.
