Bring Ghanaian Cuisine to Ajax & Durham Region/GTA — Support Dee’s Kitchen
The Issue
Canada is one of the most diverse countries in the world, and that diversity should be reflected in the food, culture and stories we are able to experience in our own communities.
Yet Ghanaian cuisine and culture remain significantly underrepresented in Ajax and Durham Region.
Ajax is one of the most diverse communities in Durham Region. According to the 2021 Census, nearly 65% of Ajax residents identify as part of a visible minority population. We believe that diversity should also be reflected in the food and cultures represented in our community.
We want to help change that.
Dee’s Kitchen began with our mother, Doris — better known to many as Auntie Dee, or Chef Dee — who was born and raised in Ghana and later continued her culinary journey in Canada. She has culinary training from both Ghana and Canada, bringing together authentic Ghanaian tradition with professional experience.
What started as a small family business has grown through community support, food events and customers travelling from across Durham Region, Toronto and other parts of the GTA to experience her food.
We are now working toward establishing a permanent Ghanaian restaurant serving Ajax, Durham Region and the GTA.
For us, this is about more than food.
Ghana has a rich culture and an important place in African and Black history, yet many people have had little opportunity to experience or learn about it. Food can be one of the most welcoming ways to introduce people to another culture — through dishes like jollof rice, waakye, fufu and many more.
A permanent Dee’s Kitchen would mean greater representation for Ghanaian Canadians, a new cultural experience for people from every background, and a place where our community can come together through food.
