Bring Fred Perry Home
The Issue
Fred Perry was born in Stockport, UK. It’s time it had a retail store for the brand.
Fred Perry is more than a global fashion icon he’s a local legend. Born in Portwood, Stockport in England in 1909, Fred Perry went on to become a tennis champion, a working-class hero and the face of a brand that would define British style for generations. From the terraces to the dance floors, Fred Perry is woven into the fabric of British culture and it all started right here in Stockport.
In Stockport Fred does have:
- A green heritage-style plaque at his childhood home at 33 Carrington Road Portwood. It reads: “Fred Perry 1909‑1995 tennis player … born here”
- A 14-mile commemorative walking route winding through Stockport borough from Woodford to Reddish
- The civic centre for Stockport Council built in 2010 is named Fred Perry House.
Stockport has done an excellent job commemorating Fred Perry, it deeply reflects the town’s pride in its most famous sporting figure.
But Stockport doesn’t have a Fred Perry retail shop for the brand?!
Stockport has seen significant investment and regeneration and with the creative buzz of the Underbank it’s transforming into one of the UK’s coolest small towns. Whilst it is buzzing with independent cafés, bars, record shops and creative spaces, its fashion retail shops haven’t kept pace. A Fred Perry store could give confidence to other fashion brands to open in Stockport, which would kickstart and define a fashion identity for the town, just like Fred Perry helped define British street style.
Fred Perry is the perfect brand that’s combines heritage roots and modern cool, it fits Stockport’s story: proud of its history but building a fresh future.
A Fred Perry shop wouldn’t just sell clothes; it could host gigs, DJ nights, exhibitions, and community collaborations that would bring more footfall and vibrancy to the town centre.
So what are we asking for?
We’re asking Fred Perry Ltd. to consider opening a flagship, a capsule or a concept store in Stockport a place that honours Fred’s legacy, supports local jobs and contributes to its ongoing revival. A retail store could become a destination for fans of the brand, visitors to the town and proud locals alike.
But this isn’t just about a shop. It’s about starting a new era for Stockport where fashion, culture, music, and community meet.
Fred Perry started here, so let’s #BringFredHome
