This petition is written on behalf of Edwin Carrasquillo with deep love, hope, and humility. Edwin has spent his entire adult life incarcerated following a tragic decision he made at the age of 19-a decision that resulted in the loss of a life and forever changed the lives of many.

We recognize that no words can undo the pain caused by that day or erase the lasting impact it has had on the victim's loved ones and everyone affected.

Before that tragedy, Edwin's childhood and adolescence were marked by significant adversity. He grew up in an environment where gang violence was normalized, experienced the separation of his parents, and endured periods of instability while living with his older brother after his mother became incarcerated. During that time, Edwin was also a victim of gun violence himself. These experiences do not excuse his actions, but they provide important context for the challenges that shaped his development as a young person.

Throughout his incarceration, Edwin has committed himself to growth and self-improvement. He earned his GED, has completed more than 114 educational courses through Edovo, has maintained employment while incarcerated, and continues to pursue educational opportunities. Rather than allowing his years in prison to define him, he has used them to reflect, accept responsibility, and work every day to become a better man.

“For the past 16 years, I have carried the weight of the life that was lost because of my actions. I was only 19 years old when I made the worst decision of my life. Not a single day has passed without me thinking about the pain I caused, the life that was taken, and the unimaginable loss suffered by the victim's family and loved ones. I know that no apology can undo what happened, and I understand that nothing I do will ever erase the harm l caused. 

Over the years, I have come to truly understand the value of human life and the responsibility we all have for the choices we make. My time in prison has given me years to reflect on my actions, accept full responsibility, and commit myself to becoming a better man. While I cannot change my past, I can continue changing the person I choose to be every day. If I am ever given the opportunity, I want to spend the rest of my life honoring that commitment by being the father my son deserves, a positive role model for my nephews, and someone who helps others avoid the same mistakes l've made.

I am not asking for my past to be forgotten or excused. I accept full responsibility for my actions and the irreversible harm they caused. I am simply asking to be recognized for the person I have worked to become through years of accountability, growth, rehabilitation, and a sincere commitment to living differently.”
