I have lived on s Oakes for only 3 years, but since living here the residents on S Oakes and nearby have seen multiple accidents happen a year. Not just on our corner of 64th but on all of S Oakes st. Either a hit and run,  or a crash so devastating it leaves property damage or bodily injury.

 My family has been impacted by these things. I have always worried that either our vehicles would be taken out, or a car would run right through our home. In October of 2022 a stolen Kia, smashed into our parked vehicles and bounced back into our fence line. This crash was labeled as a hit and run because the driver and 2 other occupants fled the scene. Two others from that vehicle were taken to the hospital. The police report stated they were minors and so no one was held accountable for the damages we were left with. Someone in another vehicle was hurt badly and from the police report stating his injuries, I am sure he was left with hospital bills that can be crippling,  but he was also left with the physical pain and suffering.

Two months later,  almost as if on schedule with this corner, another hit and run happened. Across the street on 64th and s Oakes, a vehicle which police believed to be stolen was involved in this accident. All occupants of that vehicle ran. Not only did they hit a car, but they went right into a home on this corner. I know my neighbors who have lived here a lot longer than I have, are just as fed up with this as my family is. What will it take for this city to do something to slow down s Oakes?

We want something done, not just slowing the speed limits, clearly people still speed and it's people that are breaking laws causing these incidents. Something more needs to be done whether it's a stop sign, round about or a stop light. May a death not be what it takes for this problem to be taken seriously.
