Bring Back the RN/Family Pinning Tradition for Molloy University Nursing Students

Bring Back the RN/Family Pinning Tradition for Molloy University Nursing Students
The Issue
For decades, Molloy University’s Nursing Pinning Ceremony has symbolized more than the completion of a degree — it represents sacrifice, resilience, compassion, and the transition into the nursing profession. It is one of the most meaningful milestones in a nursing student’s life.
Historically, Molloy nursing students were given the honor of being pinned by someone deeply significant to them — often a registered nurse who inspired them, a family member who supported them through the journey, or a mentor who helped shape their path. This tradition connected generations of nurses and families in a deeply personal and unforgettable moment.
After COVID-19, this meaningful tradition was removed.
While we understand that changes were necessary during the pandemic, many restrictions have since been lifted. Other long-standing traditions and ceremonies have returned to normal. Yet the opportunity for a chosen RN or family member to pin us — a tradition Molloy upheld for decades — has not been reinstated.
Nursing school is not easy. It demands emotional strength, long hours of clinical rotations, sleepless nights of studying, financial sacrifice, and unwavering determination. Behind every nursing student is a support system that carried them through the hardest days. The pinning ceremony should reflect that.
Being pinned by someone who walked beside us — or walked before us in this profession — is not just symbolic. It represents legacy, mentorship, and gratitude. It honors the people who believed in us before we believed in ourselves.
This petition is not about resisting change — it is about restoring meaning.
We respectfully ask Molloy University to reinstate the tradition of allowing nursing students to choose an RN or significant loved one to pin them during the Nursing Pinning Ceremony. This tradition has been a cherished part of Molloy’s history and reflects the heart of the nursing profession: connection, support, and community.
Let this milestone once again be personal.
Let it once again honor those who helped us reach this moment.
Let Molloy bring back a tradition that meant so much to so many.
We ask our fellow students, alumni, faculty, families, and community members to support this effort and help restore this important tradition for current and future nursing students.
