Bring back the Piedmont train service to key North Carolina stations

Bring back the Piedmont train service to key North Carolina stations
The Issue
In 2023 NCDOT adjusted the schedule for their Piedmont rail service in North Carolina. Burlington, High Point, and Salisbury were removed from the morning southbound Train 71, and the afternoon northbound Train 76. Kannapolis was removed from the afternoon southbound Train 77. This eliminated the service at key times for daily commuters. These smaller stations serve less passengers, and they were removed to shave a few minutes off the commute times for big city riders (12 minutes less for Raleigh to Charlotte). All North Carolinians should be able to access efficient and reliable transit system for work, education, and personal travel in the morning and afternoons.
The removal of the Piedmont service has not only inconvenienced daily travelers but has also impacted local economies that depend on the business and tourism generated by this transit option. According to the North Carolina Department of Commerce, tourism and travel directly contribute billions to the state's economy annually. Public transportation options like the Piedmont train are integral to maintaining this economic contribution, especially in smaller cities like Burlington, High Point, Kannapolis and Salisbury.
Many residents and taxpayers in these towns chose their homes due to the availability of such commuting options. The morning and afternoon Piedmont train offered a convenient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly alternative to car travel, thus helping to reduce traffic congestion and lower carbon emissions.
Transportation studies frequently highlight the importance of accessible commuter rail services in alleviating roadway congestion. A report by the American Public Transportation Association pointed out that investing in public transportation can yield approximately $4 in economic returns for every $1 invested. The loss of the Piedmont service undermines this economic benefit and the environmental goals of reducing greenhouse gases associated with single-passenger vehicle travel.
We urge NCDOT to reconsider this decision, especially now that they are considering expanding rail service again, and reinstate the Piedmont train service to these affected stations. By doing so, they will not only restore an indispensable service to a large community of travelers but also support local businesses, reduce traffic, and protect our environment.
Please join us in our call to action. Sign this petition to demand the return of the Piedmont train service to Burlington, High Point, Kannapolis, and Salisbury. Together, we can make a difference. NCDOT can be contacted directly at (919)707-4700
