The Issue

Cadbury Dairy Milk is one of Britain’s most iconic chocolates — but the Dairy Milk British consumers remember has changed.

For generations, Cadbury Dairy Milk was known for its distinctive rich, creamy, milky taste and smooth texture. Many consumers feel that the chocolate we buy today simply isn’t the same.

This isn’t just nostalgia. The recipe currently sold in the UK contains vegetable fats including palm and shea, alongside cocoa butter. Cadbury’s own UK website confirms this and states that the chocolate contains vegetable fats in addition to cocoa butter.

Meanwhile, Cadbury Dairy Milk sold in Australia currently uses full-cream milk, milk solids and cocoa butter, with no vegetable oils in the Dairy Milk milk-chocolate recipe. Cadbury Australia itself confirms that its Dairy Milk uses cocoa butter as the foundation of the chocolate and does not contain vegetable oils.

And this isn’t the first time consumers have successfully challenged a Cadbury recipe change. In 2009, after hundreds of letters and emails from consumers objecting to the replacement of some cocoa butter with vegetable fat including palm oil, Cadbury New Zealand announced that it was returning Dairy Milk to a cocoa-butter-only recipe. Cadbury’s managing director at the time acknowledged that the company had “got it wrong” and said the change was being reversed in response to consumers.

So why shouldn’t British consumers have the same choice?

We are calling on Cadbury to bring back the traditional UK Dairy Milk formulation — not simply a retro wrapper or a “nostalgia” edition, but the taste, texture and recipe that made Dairy Milk so special.

We want Cadbury to:

🍫 Restore cocoa butter as the sole added vegetable fat in Dairy Milk.

🥛 Review and restore the traditional milk and milk-solids formulation that gave Dairy Milk its distinctive creamy, milky character.

🍫 Recreate the traditional taste, texture and melt of the Dairy Milk British consumers remember.

🇬🇧 Give UK consumers the same quality of Dairy Milk that Cadbury already produces for other markets.

If Cadbury can make Dairy Milk without vegetable oils in Australia, and has previously reversed a vegetable-fat reformulation after listening to consumers, British chocolate lovers deserve to be heard too.

We aren’t asking Cadbury to invent something new. We’re asking them to bring back the chocolate we already had.

Bring back the real Dairy Milk. 🍫🥛🇬🇧
