Bring back the online services and shops for Nintendo DS, Wii, 3DS, and Wii U.
The Issue
On November 14th, 2005, Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection was created to allow Online Play on the Nintendo DS (and eventually the Wii). It was an amazing online service that allowed you to do tons of things, like race against your friends in Mario Kart, or battle Pokémon online, or meet your friends in Animal Crossing. Eventually the Wii started using Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection as well. The Wii had its own similar feature, known as WiiConnect24, which was released at its launch. This allowed you to do tons of fun things, like share Miis on the Mii Channel, download games off of the Wii Shop Channel, though most notably, allow access to multiple channels, such as the Forecast Channel, the News Channel, and the Everyone Votes Channel. Along with the WiiConnect24 feature, when the Wii launched, one of its many channels that were included with the console was the Wii Shop Channel. This channel allowed you to purchase tons of games & channels. When the DSi was released on November 1st, 2008, one of the many things included with it was the Nintendo DSi Shop. This also allowed you to purchase games, this time for the DSi. Then in 2011, the 3DS was released, and 4 months after its release, on June 6th, the Nintendo eShop was born. It allowed you to purchase games and applications on the 3DS. When the Wii U launched, with it came its own eShop, and the Miiverse, a social network service for the 3DS and Wii U.
But then, the first of many of these services was discontinued.
On June 28th, 2013, the beloved WiiConnect24 service was terminated. We lost access to many of the channels that required it, along with other features it provided. But that was just the beginning. On May 20th, 2014, another beloved service, Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, was terminated. All the amazing online features were lost. It was devastating. For some time, nothing happened, but on September 30th 2016, the ability to add Nintendo DSi Points to the DSi Shop was removed. We all knew what this meant. On March 31st 2017, the DSi Shop was gone. Terminated. That same year, the popular social networking service for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, the Miiverse, was terminated as well. The following year, on March 27th, the ability to add Wii Points to the Wii Shop Channel was removed. Then on January 31st, 2019, the Wii Shop Channel was shut down. This saddened many people. We thought things couldn't get worse, but on Agust 29th, 2022, the ability to add funds to the 3DS and Wii U eShops was removed, and then on March 27th, 2023, both of those eShops were shut down. It was devastating. I saw it happen. The last of these services, Nintendo Network, had the ability to transfer funds between Nintendo Network IDs to Nintendo Accounts removed on March 11th, 2024, and then on April 8th, 2024, Nintendo Network shut down.
Because of these services getting shut down, tons of amazing features of these consoles are now removed. No longer is it possible to play online on the DS, Wii, 3DS, or Wii U, no longer is it possible to buy things from the DSi Shop, the Wii Shop Channel, and the 3DS and Wii U eShops, and no longer is it possible to use WiiConnect24 or the Miiverse.
Please, Nintendo, hear us out. We want these services back, with all of their abilities intact. What exactly do we want to happen?
- Restore Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection
- Restore WiiConnect24
- Restore all the games, applications, and channels that were removed when the Wii Shop Channel shut down, as well as the ability to add Wii Points
- Restore the Nintendo DSi Shop, and the ability to add DSi Points
- Restore all the games and applications removed from the eShops for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U when they were shut down, as well as the ability to add funds on those respective eShops
- Restore Nintendo Network
- Restore the Miiverse
If you do all seven of these things, we will forever be grateful. Please, do this, Nintendo. Think about the fans and how much we love you. Please.
