I want to share another quick update and thank everyone who has supported this effort so far.
We are now approaching 60 supporters, and the petition continues to gain attention. What has been especially encouraging is seeing members of the community not only sign the petition but also help promote it so more people can learn about the issue. That kind of support means a lot.
Many people across Utah believe there is a gap in our current system when credible reports of child abuse are made, but investigators cannot physically verify a child's safety. When that happens, it can delay intervention even when serious concerns have been raised.
Recent cases have reminded many of us why this conversation matters. In the Franke case, it took the courage of a 12-year-old boy who escaped and asked a neighbor for help before authorities could intervene. No child should ever have to rely on that kind of situation for help to arrive.
Legislation like the Gavin Peterson Child Safety Bill was intended to address this issue by allowing a judge to authorize a welfare check when credible concerns exist, but access to the child is being denied.
This petition simply asks Utah lawmakers to reconsider protections that could help prevent children from falling through cracks.
We are now working toward our next goal of 100 supporters. If each person who signed this petition shared it with just one or two others, we could reach that goal very quickly.
Thank you again to everyone who has supported this effort and helped raise awareness about child safety in Utah.
