Bring back the full-color special fund plates in Pennsylvania

The Issue

In 2017, the PA state police successfully pushed through the state legislature a change to the special fund designs for Pennsylvania license plates. Thanks to the beautiful (but supremely illegible) Flagship Niagara license plates being almost impossible to read, the state troopers pushed to take the fun out of special fund license plates. We're here to put it back.

The new versions of the special funds license plates aren't helping our rankings in the best/worst state license plates (yeah, yeah, "But Rob! We're a commonwealth!" -- you know what I mean). If you don't believe me, just take a look at those rankings:

  • Aceable - Pennsylvania's plates are ranked 47th out of 50. Not a great start.
  • Autoblog - Pennsylvania's plates are ranked 49th out of 50 -- ouch!
  • Thrillist - Pennsylvania is not the trillest on Thrillists's list, ranking 44th out of 50.
  • Ranker - On a website where visitors can rank how much they'd want a license plate on their car, Pennsylvania came in at 43, one spot lower than the absolute snoozefest that is the Massachusetts plate.

The rest of the lists I found pretty much just go on like that, with PA consistently in the bottom ten. Not only does this make our cars look bad, but since the new special fund plates are so uninspiring, there are fewer people choosing them, which means less money for those special funds. The lone exception (Preserve Our Heritage) is still crushing it, however, and should never, ever change.

This petition asks the Pennsylvania legislature for the following:

  1. Restore the full-color special fund plate designs.
  2. Where needed (looking at you, Flagship Niagara plate), work with the Pennsylvania State Police as well as graphic designers and print providers, as needed, to improve legibility on all special fund plate designs.
  3. Heck, if we can swing for the moon, why not bring back the gradient design for our standard, non-special fund plates?

These three changes will funnel important money to each of the special funds that were listed in the link above, helping to preserve natural habitats and important and under-funded portions of Pennsylvania's vibrant history. They will also improve the favorability of our cars when we visit out of state, and while that's definitely a fringe benefit, it can only help in marketing our state to people who may want to visit or move here. That would in turn increase tax revenue so we can have better services for the residents that call our commonwealth home.

Please sign this quick petition and share it on your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or even TikTok (we have to court to the youths, too!).

Thank you for your time and for your help in this important endeavor!
