BRING BACK THE "BULL” TO IT’S SPIRITUAL HOME. BIRMINGHAM’S BULL-RING MARKETS

BRING BACK THE "BULL” TO IT’S SPIRITUAL HOME. BIRMINGHAM’S BULL-RING MARKETS

The Issue

Thank you for your time, considering this petition and hopefully your support.

The Birmingham Market Traders Committees respectfully propose for the  Iconic "Bull" sculpture, from the opening ceremony of the Birmingham  2022 Commonwealth Games. To be finally rested at it's "Spiritual" Birth Place - The Birmingham Bull Ring Markets vicinity, within the city centre.

We suggest an interim period to be located along Edgbaston Street and in in the long term, with all parties consent, within a location of the newly proposed, exciting, vibrant Smithfield Development.

Our reasoning is based on the historical retail markets attatchment and extremely close , meaningful association to this wonderful symbol of Birmingham.

                                   For Your Information:

Historical association with the Bull Ring Markets.

Around 1166 a market charter was granted by Henry 11 and finally endorsed by Richard 1 (1189) to the lord of the manor of Berm,(Peter de Bermingham). Granting permission to hold a weekly market at his moated manor, where he levied tolls on goods and produce sold. First called the "Corn Cheaping" in reference to the "Corn Market", the Bull Ring referred to a green area within the market. In the 16th century, John Cooper was given the rights to bait and sell bulls at the site opposite St Martin's church within this market green area, which became known as the now famous Bull Ring Market. Early 19th century expansion of the area around St. Martin's church, which had become crowded with old buildings, narrow streets and traders stalls. This expansion formed and encouraged the growth of Birmingham.

The brief "Bull Ring" historical detail above, emphasises the importance of the natural growth from infancy to present day status of this great city of Birmingham. The recognition of one area of the city which encouraged entrepreneurial endeavour and just plain hard work, spread economical growth from a small market area "The Bull Ring" to one of the worlds leading cities.

Our city's heritage still remains something to be cherished.

Every ounce of "Praise" should be recognised not ignored.

We, the Birmingham City Market Traders forward this message to state our case and seek your approval, for the iconic "Bull's" next location to be within the Birmingham Bull Ring Markets complex. It's rightful "Spiritual Home".

The proposed location would allow the viewing and marvelling of this magnificent piece of art, enabling the shopping and tourist visitors to enjoy and learn about the origins of this great city.

We are proud of Birmingham. We want to endorse our association in recognition of the city's humble beginnings to that  of a wonderful present day vibrant city, eloquently presented by this bold, iconic symbol.

The acceptance of this petition proposal is in the best interest of the people of Birmingham. The multiple communities that reside are aware that together, with hard work, determination and perseverance, you can make anything possible.

We hope you agree with our sentiment.
