BRING BACK OUR BUSES!

BRING BACK OUR BUSES!
The Issue
OUR TRANSIT SYSTEM IS BEING HELD FOR RANSOM!
Ever since their deal expired on January 1st, 2023, and their overtime ban started on January the 6, CUPE 4500 and its workers strike has been hurting the vulnerable people who use the bus and train to get to where they need to be. Coast Mountain Bus Company runs 96% of all bus routes in Metro Vancouver. Let's what damage 48 hours+ can do…...
People who rely on the transit system couldn’t get to work or school during the shutdown…
Seniors, Students, low-income individuals and many more….
Seniors and people with disabilities can’t get to appointments or get medication when transit isn’t running…
Students like myself can’t get to school and have to walk long distances or fork out precious pennies for a taxi or ride share….
Low-income individuals could be one less pay check from paying their rent, and getting evicted…
People can get fired from their jobs when transit isn’t running and can’t get to work….
Businesses can lose customers, and valuable sales and employees who rely on transit can’t get to work….
I have heard from someone whilst I was waiting at a bus stop about how the strike affected them. They rely on transit to get medication and go to doctors' appointments weekly and walk with a cane so distance mobility is difficult. Without the bus, going to these appointments gets even more difficult.
300 000+ PEOPLE RELY ON TRANSIT IN VANCOUVER, ARE YOU ONE OF THEM?
CUPE 4500 refuses to accept CMBCs proposal of 13.5% increase in pay for transit supervisors and after 48 hours of bus and Seabus shutdown, wants to bring down the entire system in one massive, targeted strike towards transit dependant individuals! Many have had no choice but to pay $100s for ride share and taxis, and if they strike again, many more will be out of pocket hundreds…
On Monday, January 29th, they will be going to the Labour relations board for permission to picket Skytrain stations as well as bus depots!
Here is what next week could look like:
https://vancouversun.com/news/local-news/special-mediator-appointed-in-b-c-transit-dispute
Should the labour board permit, and if the mediator Vince Ready can’t get both sides an agreement by Sunday at midnight there will be a 72 HOUR, 3 DAY PARALYSIS OF THE TRANSIT SYSTEM!!
SKYTRAIN AND THE WEST COAST EXPRESS ARE NEXT!
This strike was perfectly planned and timed after several snow days paralyzed the lower mainland so it would hurt the systems ridership, Translinks financials and victimize the people who depend on transit the most.
It’s only going to get worse without a deal!
Coast Mountain Bus Companies offer: (The standard)
Here is an example:
Transit Supervisor (From https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/translink-cupe-bus-seabus-strike-negotiations
13.5 percent over three years (from $92.415 to $106,886)
CUPE 4500 Demands:
25% over three years (From $92,415 to $115,477)
Even Kevin Quinn, Translinks CEO is concerned: (Buzzer link, copy and paste)
https://buzzer.translink.ca/2024/01/a-letter-from-kevin-quinn-translink-ceo/
He is angry and frustrated at the lack of progress on a deal by the union and CMBC and the timing of the strikes impact on the system… Like many of you who were stranded by the reckless actions of a few, having your ability to put food on the table impacted…
He says they want wage increases higher than all other employee unions, and most importantly, he is urging CMBC and the Union to go back to the table!
This unions strike will help Translink take the plunge off a financial cliff, which is bad for our already overcrowded system, the 99b line from Broadway to UBC in 2022 had 9,000,000 boardings and counting! They will have a 4.7 billion dollar deficit, or 600 million Dollars per year over the next ten years to deal with, which the union's demands will ‘help’ greatly. (Coming by 2026) This will lead to 60 percent of all transit services being AXED or REDUCED in some way.
DONT LET 180 PEOPLE HOLD OUR TRANSIT SYSTEM FOR RANSOM!
JOIN ME IN DENOUNCING THIS STRIKE, DEMANDING TRANSIT BE DECLARED AN ESSENTIAL SERVICE AND FOR CUPE 4500 ACCEPT CMBCS OFFER!
REMEMBER:
“This shortfall in anticipated fare revenues coupled with the previously mentioned inflationary measures and declining fuel tax have left us with a structural deficit we must address — financial analysis projects that TransLink will face an annual revenue shortfall of 600 million beginning in 2026.”
Or 4.7 BILLION DOLLARS OVER TEN YEARS!!! (By 2033)
“Metro Vancouver’s regional transit and transportation system says it’s facing a $4.7 billion funding shortfall over the next decade, and without help it could be forced to cut service by as much as 60 per cent.”
That’s
Fewer, less frequent buses to get people where they need to go
Less frequent Skytrain and potentially West Coast Express
Our transit system already struggles with reliability, with route 23 topping the charts in 2023 with passups and the 321 for being extremely overcrowded….lines wrap around the bus loops that it stops at.
We can’t let one unions strike set this dangerous precedent…. for the sake of all our transit routes and the thousands of jobs that rely on it!
CUPE 4500 ACCEPT CMBCS OFFER NOW!!!! DONT LET ONE STRIKE IMPACT OUR TRANSIT SYSTEMS FUTURE!
