Bring back network packages from Nexstar's local newscasts

The Issue

I would inform you recently that Nexstar Media Group, Inc. is replacing their network packages (CBS Newspath, ABC NewsOne, NBC News channel and Fox NewsEdge) with their national NewsNation newscasts.

Most recent stations already dropped it in favor of NewsNation, so time to stop this mess and bring back their network packages into their newscasts.

This change marks a deliberate effort to diminish the role of the traditional broadcast networks in local newscasts. Nexstar has already ended a prior agreement with Comcast’s NBC that permitted the sharing of nationally reported segments on its stations. Popular network programs such as the Today Show and Nightly News will remain on the air unaffected, but the flexible filler content that stations previously used to round out their local shows will now come exclusively from internal Nexstar sources. The shift aims to position NewsNation as the central provider of national news material across the entire portfolio of local operations, replacing the mix of third-party wire services and external feeds that have long supported daily newscast production.

The Nexstar company seeks to strengthen their position, against the longstanding power of the big three networks. By channeling national stories through its own cable outlet, Nexstar seeks to create greater consistency in how information flows from corporate headquarters to individual markets while maintaining the appearance of local control over day-to-day reporting. NewsNation, which expanded its round-the-clock news programming in recent years, offers coverage focused on national politics, breaking events, and general interest stories. The channel’s content is expected to fill gaps that were once occupied by network-supplied packages, allowing Nexstar to control both the tone and selection of national topics aired locally.

Nexstar is in the midst of a lawsuit against DirecTV and eight states for halting the Tegna merger.

Sign the petition to bring back their national packages (CBS Newspath, ABC NewsOne, NBC News channel and Fox NewsEdge) back to Nexstar's local newscasts and stop the NewsNation mess from their local newscasts.
