The Issue

As a concerned parent in the Steel Valley School District, I am deeply troubled by the recent decision to transfer Mrs. Brandi Chalus, one of our esteemed school counselors, to a Middle School just as we are on the verge of opening the new Steel Valley Elementary School. This change is disappointing not only to my family but also to numerous others who were reassured of a comprehensive mental health support system for our children.

Our community has anxiously awaited the inauguration of this new school, hopeful for the promise it holds in fostering a supportive and nurturing environment where all children can thrive both socially and emotionally. Mrs. Chalus has been an integral part of our children's mental health support system, and her absence poses a significant setback to the assurances given by the School Board about prioritizing mental health.

In today’s world, especially following the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health has become more critical than ever. The American Psychological Association reports an increased demand for mental health services for children. School counselors play a crucial role in this context, being the frontline support system for our children. Mrs. Chalus has not only offered such support but also built trusting relationships with students and parents alike, a cornerstone for any effective school-based mental health initiative.

Mental health is as essential as academic education in the overall development of students. Families, teachers, and administrators had placed their trust in the School Board's promise to prioritize mental health support. However, transferring Mrs. Chalus undermines this goal. Her expertise, commitment, and understanding of the unique needs of our children are irreplaceable.

Therefore, we urge the Steel Valley School Board and district officials to reconsider their decision and reinstate Mrs. Chalus back to the Steel Valley Elementary School. By doing so, they will not only stand by their promises to the community but also ensure a smooth transition for our children in a new environment where they feel supported, understood, and cared for.

We ask for the solidarity of our community to sign this petition and advocate for the well-being of our children. Every signature brings us one step closer to ensuring that mental health remains a priority at Steel Valley Elementary.
