I am writing this petition because I am passionate about soccer and the opportunities it can provide, not just for myself but for many others at East Carolina University (ECU). Soccer is more than just a sport; it is a pathway to pursuing dreams, achieving academic success, and enhancing personal growth through teamwork and competition.

In recent years, the decision to disband the men's official college soccer team at ECU has closed doors for aspiring athletes seeking to develop their talents and potentially go pro. As a student who dreams of playing soccer professionally, it's disheartening to see this critical avenue for sports and career development taken away.

College soccer teams offer invaluable experiences that extend beyond the field. They provide students with the skills needed to excel in life, including discipline, time management, and leadership. Additionally, they enhance campus spirit and community engagement, bringing together students, faculty, and alumni in support of our athletes.

Statistics show that college soccer plays a significant role in developing future professional players. Over the past decade, numerous professional soccer players have honed their skills at the collegiate level before transitioning to Major League Soccer (MLS) or international clubs. By reinstating the men's soccer team at ECU, we are not just giving athletes a chance to pursue their dreams, but we are also contributing to the US soccer landscape and fostering future talents who can compete on bigger stages.

Furthermore, having a men's soccer team can boost the university's reputation by increasing its national and international appeal, attracting talent, and improving diversity and inclusion within the student community.

We call on ECU's administration to reconsider their decision and reinstate the men's official college soccer team. Let's revive this important part of our university's sports culture, provide opportunities for aspiring athletes, and continue to foster the growth of soccer talent at ECU.
