The Issue

Years ago, Hey Arnold! was canceled as a result of poor decisions by Nickelodeon, leaving the story without an ending for the series. However, the fans never gave up and for 15 years they sent letters, messages and kept the petition alive to get a conclusion. Thanks to that perseverance, Nickelodeon gave the green light to Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie.

In the movie, Arnold manages to reunite with his parents, although they remain disoriented after so many years asleep. Arnold and Helga are now a couple, but she retains her usual personality, and they will have to face new challenges together. Additionally, Arnold and his friends are starting 6th grade, leaving open the possibility of continuing with a sixth season.

Craig Bartlett has stated in several interviews that he wants to continue the series with a sixth season, and that even the deleted scenes from the movie could return as flashbacks. There are still stories to tell, especially about Arnold’s parents and his relationship with Helga. In fact, Craig Bartlett has already presented Nickelodeon with a proposal for a possible sixth season, and he, his team, and the cast are all interested in continuing the series. However, the final decision does not depend on them, but on Nickelodeon, which has not yet made an official statement on the matter.

Throughout several interviews, Craig Bartlett has expressed his enthusiasm for continuing Hey Arnold! with a sixth season. He has also dropped subtle hints about possible future storylines, and below we’ve gathered some of his most notable comments.

"Okay, everyone, when you see a question for "will there be a season 6" refer the asker to this. I want to do a season 6. My crew wants to do a season 6, and the cast wants to do a season 6. Nickelodeon knows this, we have been talking about it for a long time. I've put together a proposal about what would happen in a season 6. Now it is up to Nickelodeon if it will happen or not. I don't control it; Nickelodeon does. If they decide to do a season 6, they will tell me, and as soon as I know I will tell the fans on my social media. Meanwhile, until I know something, I won't say anything about it, because I simply don't know. I don't want to jinx it by speculating, and besides, nothing is real until "the ink dries and that ship has sailed," as Big Bob likes to say." [1]

"We all enjoyed making the Jungle Movie so much, that it inspires me to make new episodes more than any other time in the run of the show. I would jot down ideas for shows in my notebook as we went. I bet we could pitch out a whole season with ease. We'd all love to do it." [1]

"I’ve made it clear to Nickelodeon that I’d love to make more episodes. The Jungle Movie was intended to reboot the series by aging everyone up a year or so, and redesigning everything for a refreshed look that also wasn’t too jarringly different. So, now they’re entering sixth grade, and Arnold has his parents back, and he’s told Helga that he loves her. I would tell stories about the challenge of having his slightly-addled Mom and Dad added to the mix at the boarding house, so that he’s got kooky grandparents AND kooky parents. And I think it would be fun to do stories about Arnold and Helga trying to have a relationship where she’s still prickly and shoots her mouth off, so it’s on-again-off-again, and besides they are still kids anyway, too young for a real “relationship.” And there’s that huge ensemble cast, with many other stories I’d like to tell." [4]

"We did write a big reunion scene at the end of the movie that ties up many loose ends, but as we were cutting out stuff for time, we realized that to have Arnold wake up right where he did, and wonder if it was all a dream, was so powerful that we don't regret cutting the reunion scene. We've talked about writing a flashback episode for season 6 that touches on some of the stuff that got cut." [1]

"I agree, it's kind of crazy that Nick hasn't asked me to reboot it. maybe they feel that the Jungle Movie was my one shot at rebooting the series. But I wrote it so it would be obviously open-ended. There's plenty more to do with the series, but I can't do it without Nick wanting it." [2]

"I’ve been saying this all along: The movie’s been made to act perfectly as closure so that everybody feels satisfied that all of the storylines got wrapped up. And also, at the end of the movie, they’re starting sixth grade, so season six is also my hope." [3]

"The idea of what will happen with Miles and Stella now that they are back in the neighborhood would be a main theme of a season 6. I think they would try to update the boarding house and take over running it from Grandma and Grandpa, and there would be tensions over that." [1]

"Good question! We would basically try to make a season that was balanced with advancing the stories of favorite side characters, coming up with new Urban Legends, and just seeing what Arnold will do now that he's gotten his slightly-batty parents back, and how they will all figure out how to live in the boarding house together" [1]

"I'm always game for more Arnold in any form, it's my most beloved show. The whole TV animation biz is in a bit of a hot mess right now, we're all waiting to see what's next. Nick knows how to find me if they want more." [2]

"Sure, I'd be down for that. A one-off where they're all adults is a fun concept. If we'd done more seasons, I probably would have tried that as a special." [2]

We already proved our strength as a community by making The Jungle Movie a reality, and today we can do it again to bring back the sixth season of Hey Arnold!. Craig Bartlett and his team have shown interest in continuing the story, but we need Nickelodeon to hear our voices once more.
