Bring back Free Speech on Gaming Platforms and Social Media

The Issue

I remember a time, not so long ago, when the world seemed less fragile, less censored, and we could escape into our gaming paradises. The frustration is deep as we contend with increasingly stringent language restrictions that not only inhibit free interaction but also shatter the sense of immersion. One might argue that an element of escapism is lost when we are constantly monitoring our vernacular.

Today, we are heavily censored, our words monitored, and speaking our minds could result in punitive actions. Yes, not all words are palatable, and that's why there's a block button for those who don't want to expose themselves to certain types of speech. According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, we should respect individuals' rights to freely express their thoughts. They argue that users should have the power to control their own digital experience. This sentiment rings true as freedom of speech is a human right as defined by Article 19 of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Active moderation of online communities could erode users' rights to free expression, limiting the diversity of opinions shared. However, the same study points out that user control mechanisms, such as the block feature, can provide shared social spaces with the ability to cater to individual preferences and sensitivities, thus forming more organic communities that respect individual boundaries.

As users of these platforms, we come with different outlooks, languages, and cultural backgrounds. We seek authentic conversations, and we believe it's essential to protect our rights to have open discussions while also preserving the discretion to control our own exposure. It's time to call on gaming platforms and social media companies—let's keep free speech at the heart of the virtual communities we cherish, and let users decide for themselves who they listen to. Please sign this petition to defend our freedom of speech and right to active discretion in digital spaces.
