The Issue

The Provo Recreation Center has abruptly canceled Dirtylicious Dance Fitness (DDF), one of its most popular and empowering classes. This decision was based on a single anonymous complaint, with no direct input from the hundreds of community members who regularly attended and deeply valued these classes.

DDF has profoundly changed thousands of lives, fostering a vibrant, supportive community. It helps individuals (myself included) feel confident, healthy, and connected, improving mental and physical well-being and building self-esteem.

Provo Rec management claims the class didn’t align with their “values and programming direction.” However, when pressed for specifics, they were unable to provide any clear policies or examples of movements deemed "inappropriate," meaning Dirtylicious instructors never violated any existing, communicated guidelines.

Despite DDF’s repeated attempts and willingness to collaborate on solutions and make any necessary changes, Provo Rec leadership ignored their efforts, making this final decision unilaterally.

This decision feels biased, inconsistent, and unjust — especially when a thriving community of paying members, along with the broader public who champions the right to dance, weren't given a fair say.

We're asking the Provo Rec Center and Provo Parks & Recreation leadership to:

    • Reinstate DDF classes at the Rec.

    • Establish clear, published guidelines for all class content, developed transparently.

    • Include community voices in decisions that affect members and the public's right to access diverse fitness options.

Let's stand up for wellness, confidence, community, and the fundamental right to dance without arbitrary restrictions. Sign and share – whether you've attended DDF, are a Provo Rec member, or simply believe in preserving diverse dance opportunities for everyone!

Responded
Thanks for reaching out. The city’s official statement is below: Provo’s Recreation Center is a family-friendly, tax-funded facility. We take resident feedback seriously and actively follow up to ensure community voices play a meaningful role in shaping our services. Fitness classes at the Recreation Center are open to individuals 14 and older, we recognize the need to protect minors, particularly when video recording and online posting was occurring. During our review, we also identified unapproved marketing efforts and the use of the facility’s logo in ways that did not align with our established branding guidelines. Based on these considerations and in keeping with our operational standards, it was determined to discontinue the classes. This decision was discussed with and supported by a citizen advisory board. Dirtylicious as an organization has never been contractually affiliated with the Provo Recreation Center. This is merely a decision on classes offered by Provo City staff members.
