Bring Back Delilah!

The Issue

The Welsh Rugby Union recently made the decision that the Tom Jones song, Delilah should no longer be performed by choirs ahead of international rugby matches.

Delilah is a popular song that has been played in the stadium before rugby matches for many years. However, there have been recent calls to ban the song due to its lyrics, which some argue are sexist and promote violence against women. While it is important to consider the message of a song and its impact on society, it is also important to differentiate between the art of music and the act itself.

Banning Delilah does not address the root cause of the issues it portrays, such as gender-based violence, but instead, silences it. Music has the power to bring people together and challenge social norms and beliefs, but it is up to the listeners to interpret and understand the lyrics in the appropriate context. Furthermore, censoring art does not solve the problems it portrays; it only hides them from view.

As a society, we must strive to educate and raise awareness about gender-based violence and its impact on women, rather than banning a song that has been popular for decades. We must recognize the distinction between art and the act it depicts, and work to promote understanding and respect for all genders, races, and beliefs.

In conclusion, while it is important to consider the message of a song and its impact on society, banning Delilah is not the solution. We must work to educate and raise awareness about gender-based violence, and recognize the difference between art and the act it depicts.

We would therefore ask the WRU to reverse the ban on the song Delilah including the decision that was made in 2015 to remove the song from half-time playlists.
