Bring back and relaunch Crackle as a free streaming service soon #BringBackCrackle
The Issue
Remembering Crackle? You know the story: Crackle (formerly Grouper (around 2004-2007) and Sony Crackle (2018-19)) was an American-based free-to-watch video streaming service. It was founded in 2004 as Grouper, before the service was purchased by Sony Pictures in 2006 and renamed Crackle. In 2018, the name was changed to Sony Crackle. A year later in March 2019, Sony sold a majority stake to the now-defunct Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment and the name was changed back from Sony Crackle to simply Crackle. Five years later in July 2024, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment was placed in Chapter 7 liquidation, which entailed a liquidation of the company's assets and the cessation of its subsidiaries, including Crackle; while all other subsidiaries were closed, the Chapter 7 trustee kept the Crackle website operating for the United States until June 2025.
Impact & Legacy: People want Sony and The Orchard (aka Orchard Distribution) to bring back Crackle as a return to a free-to-watch streaming service and add live TV with free 24/7 channels like Crackle, Crackle Kids, Crackle Comedy, Crackle Action, Crackle Horror, and Crackle Games, as well as seven more channels and Spanish channels. They also add two simultaneous free-to-watch streaming services such as a free streaming service for kids and teens called Crackle Kids and another simultaneous free-to-watch streaming service Crackle Anime, a free-to-watch streaming service dedicated to anime shows and movies straight from Japan.
- But that's not all, they were also going to have DVD and Blu-ray-style features and settings while either a movie or a TV show is playing.
- For example, Crackle has a collection of DVD and Blu-ray-style special features has behind-the-scenes footage (featurettes), deleted scenes, documentaries, music videos (something that Disney+ don't have), gag reels and commentary tracks, as well as movie trailers. It will be added under the "Extras" tab as the DVD-style extras on the free-to-watch streaming service are in a similar fashion to DVD-style extras from DVD and Blu-ray releases that are ported over to the subscription streaming service Disney+, the only difference is that Crackle is a free-to-watch streaming service while Disney+ is a subcription streaming service.
- They also add settings like choosing a language (English, French (Canadian French aka Quebec), Spanish (Latin Spanish aka Latin American Spanish), Portuguese (Brazilian Portuguese) and Japanese) or a commentary track both under "Settings" while either a movie or a TV show is playing. Some language tracks they have on both movies and TV shows as well as foreign movies and some shows don't have language tracks (particularly game shows and talk shows that are only in English), both will be available on both Crackle alongside Crackle Kids and Crackle Anime simultaneously.
Movies and TV library: Crackle featured movies and TV shows, mainly from Sony Pictures and its subsidiaries, including Columbia Pictures, TriStar Pictures, Screen Gems, Sony Pictures Classics, and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions. Besides Sony Pictures, they also featured anime straight from Crunchyroll and Animax, as well as acquired content from respective companies. A24, A&E Networks, BBC Studios, CBS Media Ventures, Cineville, Discotek Media, Entertainment One, Epic Pictures, FilmRise, Endemol, Smart Dog Media, Fremantle, Gaumont, Hallmark Entertainment, Lionsgate, Magnolia Pictures, MarVista Entertainment, Nordisk Film, Oscilloscope Laboratories, Samuel Goldwyn Films, Screen Media Ventures, Shout! Factory, STX Entertainment and Tribeca Film.
