Please Reconsider Ending Babul’s Takeaway Service – A Community Appeal ❤️
As a customer of Babul’s and someone who values what this independent local business brings to Barnard Castle, I was genuinely saddened to hear that the takeaway service is coming to an end. I want to make one thing very clear from the beginning: this petition is not intended to criticise Babul’s, its owners or its team.
We understand that this decision has not been made lightly. The pressures facing small businesses are very real. Rising staffing costs, ingredients, energy, packaging and other overheads have made operating increasingly difficult, while managing takeaway orders alongside a busy restaurant can place enormous pressure on both the kitchen and front-of-house team.
We also completely support Babul’s in saying that no member of staff should ever have to tolerate verbal abuse, aggression or disrespect from customers. There is no excuse for treating people badly simply because an order is delayed or something has gone wrong.
However, rather than seeing the takeaway service disappear altogether, we are asking Babul’s to reconsider whether there could be another way.
For many people in our community, a takeaway is much more than an occasional Friday-night treat. There are elderly residents who may struggle to comfortably eat out in a busy restaurant. There are people with disabilities, health or mobility difficulties who may find visiting the restaurant challenging. There are carers who cannot easily leave the person they are caring for. There are parents with young children for whom eating out is not always practical. There are people working long shifts, late hours and weekends who rely on local takeaway options.
And because we live in a rural area, there are also people in surrounding villages who have fewer food choices available to them than those living in larger towns and cities.
For some customers, ordering Babul’s food to enjoy at home has allowed them to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries and family occasions when going out simply wasn’t possible.
Taking the service away therefore removes more than convenience — it removes choice and accessibility for a significant part of our local community.
There is also a wider impact.
Babul’s has developed a loyal following far beyond customers who regularly dine inside the restaurant. Takeaways introduce people to the business, encourage repeat custom and help keep spending with an independent Barnard Castle business rather than sending customers towards national chains or businesses outside the area.
Local businesses are part of what makes our town special, and we want to find ways to support them rather than simply accept the loss of services that people have come to value. That is why we are asking whether some practical compromises could be trialled before takeaways disappear completely.
1. Make takeaway ordering online-only.
Removing telephone and walk-in orders would significantly reduce interruptions to staff and allow the restaurant to control exactly how many orders are accepted.
2. Introduce fixed collection slots with strict order limits.
Once a particular time reaches capacity, customers would have to select another slot. This would prevent the kitchen becoming overwhelmed and help protect dine-in service.
3. Create a smaller dedicated takeaway menu.
Focus on dishes that can be produced consistently, efficiently and that travel particularly well. A smaller menu could reduce complexity during busy periods.
4. Increase takeaway prices where necessary.
If the existing pricing no longer covers the true cost of providing the service, many customers would rather pay a reasonable amount more than lose takeaways altogether. We cannot ask a local business to provide a service at a loss.
5. Offer takeaways on selected days or during selected hours only.
The service does not necessarily need to operate every evening. It could be available on quieter days, or within certain periods where the kitchen can realistically accommodate the additional demand.
6. Introduce a minimum order value and clearer customer expectations.
A minimum spend could help make each order commercially worthwhile, while online ordering could clearly explain collection times, possible delays during busy periods and the standards of behaviour expected towards staff.
None of these suggestions will solve every challenge, and ultimately only Babul’s knows what is operationally and financially possible. But that is the purpose of this petition. We are not demanding that the old takeaway system simply comes back unchanged. We are asking for a conversation.
We are asking whether there is a middle ground that protects the restaurant, protects its staff and still allows an important service to remain available to the community.
If enough customers are willing to accept fewer collection slots, a reduced menu, higher prices, limited operating hours and a more structured ordering system, perhaps there is an opportunity to create a takeaway service that works better for everybody.
Babul’s is an important independent business in our town. We want to see it succeed for many years to come, and we recognise that difficult decisions sometimes have to be made to protect that future. But before this particular chapter closes, we would simply ask:
Please give the community an opportunity to show how much this service matters.
If you value Babul’s takeaway service and would like them to reconsider bringing it back in a more sustainable and manageable form, please sign this petition and share it with others.
Let’s show Babul’s that there is still strong support for their takeaway service — while also showing that customers are willing to compromise, adapt and support the business in making it work.
This isn’t about demanding more from a small business. It is about asking whether, together as a community, we can find a better way. ❤️
