Help Bring Mohammed Azeem Miah Home

We are asking the UK Government to urgently intervene and provide support for Mohammed Azeem Miah, an 18-year-old young man from London who has been detained in Kuwait since 15 September, following allegations relating to drug smuggling.

Azeem is a care leaver and a vulnerable young person who was known to services in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. In 2025, he was placed under child protection measures due to concerns about exploitation. He had previously been known to have been groomed and exploited, making his vulnerability and need for safeguarding support well documented.

We are deeply concerned that, despite these known vulnerabilities, Azeem was not adequately safeguarded before he travelled to Kuwait. His circumstances raise serious questions about whether the appropriate support and protection were provided to him as a vulnerable young person transitioning out of care.

Azeem is now detained in Kuwait, far from his family and support network. We understand from the British Embassy that Azeem has reportedly said that he is being treated “like an animal.” We are extremely concerned for his welfare, his physical and emotional wellbeing, and his ability to understand and navigate the situation he now finds himself in.

We are not asking the UK Government to interfere with Kuwait's legal process. We are asking for urgent support, diplomatic engagement and safeguarding assistance for a vulnerable British young person.

We call on the UK Government to:

Acknowledge Azeem's documented history of vulnerability, grooming and exploitation.
Urgently engage with the Kuwaiti authorities regarding his detention and welfare.
Ensure that Azeem has access to appropriate legal representation, consular assistance, medical and emotional support.
Work with the relevant UK authorities and Tower Hamlets to establish what safeguarding failures may have occurred and what support can now be provided.
Explore, within the appropriate legal and diplomatic framework, what steps can be taken to help bring Azeem home to the UK.
Ensure that his status as a vulnerable care leaver and his history of exploitation are properly considered when providing consular and safeguarding support.
Azeem is only 18. He is a young person who has already experienced vulnerability and exploitation and who needs support, protection and advocacy.
