Bring Awareness To Colorism Within Asian Communities.

Bring Awareness To Colorism Within Asian Communities.
The Issue
Asian beauty pageant winner, Miss Thailand World, Nonthawan Thongleng, shortly after winning faced many hate comments about the complexion of her skin. The cause of this was she was not fair skinned compared to what usually is represented on tv in Asian communities. Many Asians are directed to use skin whitening products, to achieve the 'pearly white skin' that is commonly sought after, but multiple of these products contain many harmful and dangerous ingredients such as mercury, hydroquinone, steroids, bleach, etc. that are highly toxic, especially after used in prolonged periods of time. Unlike most people would think, it is not only women, men are affected too, because they are being pushed to use lightening products on their skin also.
What makes this such a frustrating topic is how people are impacted by it. Fairer skinned people get more opportunities such as jobs or even when it comes to social status, like when looking to marry. Dark skin in Asia is associated with working outside (getting dark from the sun), poverty, and being dirty while white skin is associated with being clean and pampered and living inside. Even if you are not Asian, you are still able to sign this petition to show your support for bringing awareness to it. This has been a problem for many years and someone needs to speak up about it, because if not you, then who else will? The more people that see this, will bring awareness to this message and can help our younger generations put a stop to the continuation of colorism.
