The Issue

ANZACATA's current supervision requirements are outdated, unnecessarily restrictive and out of line with all other comparable professional bodies for therapist, counsellors and psychologists across New Zealand and Australia. Current requirements make supervision cost prohibitive and are driving Arts Therapists away from ANZACATA membership and the profession in general.

Current ratios or requirements for ANZACATA are double (if not triple) the requirements of most other professional bodies and industry/national standards. Assuming a full-time workload of twenty client hours per week, current requirements and guidelines are:

ANZACATA: 1 hour of supervision for every fifteen hours of client contact (5 or 6 times per month)

NZAC - 1 hour of supervision for every two weeks of full time work (twice per month). Source: https://nzac.org.nz/site/membership/supervision/faq

PACFA - 15 hours annually (once or twice per month). Source: https://pacfa.org.au/portal/portal/Membership/CPDSupervision.aspx#tab-2

NZCCA - 1 hour of supervision for every 40 hours of client contact (twice per month). Source: https://www.nzcca.org.nz/members/supervision-and-cpd/supervision-requirements/

NZPB - 2 hours of supervision per month for full time psychologists (twice per month). Source: https://psychologistsboard.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/BPG-Supervision-June-2021.pdf

PBANZ - 1 hour of supervision per fortnight (twice per month). Source: https://pbanz.org.nz/common/Uploaded%20files/Consultations/Revised%20Supervision%20policy%20June%202023.pdf

This petition calls for a change in the minimum ANZACATA requirements to 1 hour of supervision per fortnight for full time practitioners, in line with other bodies listed above. This change would make supervision more affordable and practical, whilst still prioritising practitioner growth and development and the safety and wellbeing of our clients.
