Bring Aldi to the Bangor/Brewer area
The Issue
Having lived in the Bangor/Brewer area for many years, I've watched our community struggle to find convenient, affordable grocery options. While Bangor and Brewer are geographically compact, they anchor a metro area of nearly 160,000 people across Orono, Old Town, Hampden, Hermon, Veazie, Orrington, Winterport, and beyond — a real market that's currently underserved.
We have stores like Hannaford, Walmart, Sam's Club, and BJ's, but they all pose challenges for quick trips or non-bulk shopping. Hannaford, while valuable, is still a large store that takes time to navigate. Walmart, Sam's Club, and BJ's are big-box or bulk-focused, overwhelming when you just need a few staples.
Aldi solves this. Its compact size and efficient layout make shopping simple. Aldi offers high-quality products, unique finds, and incredibly low prices — exactly what this region needs. Its smaller-footprint, curated model fits perfectly into our local shopping landscape, filling a gap that's painfully obvious to everyone from Bangor to Brewer to the surrounding towns.
The site data backs this up. Exit 187 (Hogan Road) on I-95 is Maine's busiest diamond interchange, carrying roughly 35,000 vehicles a day — and it sits right at the retail corridor already anchored by Sam's Club, Walmart, Target, BJ's, and even a Hannaford. The state is currently investing tens of millions of dollars into a major overhaul of this interchange, underscoring just how critical this corridor is to the region's economy and how much continued growth is expected here. This is exactly the kind of dense, high-traffic, well-invested location Aldi looks for in a new market, and a compact Aldi store would fit naturally alongside the retailers already thriving there.
Portland recently welcomed an Aldi, making expansion north both promising and feasible. With a regional population approaching 160,000, one of the state's busiest retail interchanges, and no Aldi within an hour's drive, the market is clearly here. A store in this area wouldn't just add convenience — it would support budget-conscious families across the region, stimulate local economic growth, and create jobs.
Bangor, Brewer, and the surrounding communities are ready for an option like Aldi. This isn't just about adding a store to the map — it's about building a more affordable, accessible future for our whole region. Please sign and show Aldi that we're ready to welcome them with open arms.
