Not that long ago, most large high street banks had a branch in Summertown, and there were Post Office counters in the large Co-op and North Parade. Now there are no banks or Post Office counters. The nearest banks are far away in the city centre; and the Post Office wants to close the main St Aldate’s Post Office.

Councillor James Fry and local activist Paul Shuter want to do something about this. They are exploring with the not-for-profit Cash Access UK whether the needs of our community qualify us for a Banking Hub* in Summertown.

*A Banking Hub is a shared banking space on the high street. Hubs provide a counter service operated by the Post Office, where customers of all major banks and building societies can carry out cash transactions. The Hubs can also offer a Community Banker service where customers can talk to their own bank about more complicated banking issues.

Our Labour Government has pledged to open an extra 350 Banking Hubs up and down the country by supporting the Financial Conduct Authority and the ATM network Link.
