The Southern Moreton Bay Islands remain one of the last places near Brisbane where land is still affordable. Blocks of land as low as $50,000 sit just 5km across the water from mainland blocks worth $300,000–$500,000. A bridge from Victoria Point to Macleay Island, costing around $200–300 million over and taking 3–4 years to build, would not only open these islands to safe, reliable access - it would unlock enormous value. If even 2,000 lots rose from $50,000 to $300,000, the uplift could return $75–100 million in capital gains tax federally and $20–30 million in QLD stamp duty to government revenues, recouping a significant share of the cost.

However, the maximum potential is far more significant, today, around 9,000 people live on the islands. With proper infrastructure and planning, that number could grow to 20,000–25,000 residents, supported by new housing, services, and investment. Much of the existing housing stock consists of  basic dwellings that sell for $100–350k. With a bridge, many of these would be replaced by modern family homes valued at $600k–$800k, multiplying the total residential property value of the Southern Moreton Bay Islands from roughly $1 billion today (based on current dwelling stock from the islands) to $7–10 billion in future value. This redevelopment cycle alone represents billions in economic growth and a stronger local tax base.

With the Brisbane 2032 Olympics ahead, the world will be watching. These islands are prime holiday destinations, and improved access would allow them to host visitors, supply tourism capacity, and inject growth into QLD’s economy. While the bridge might only add 2,000–3,000 new homes — not a complete fix to the affordability crisis — it would still make a meaningful difference for families priced out elsewhere.

Construction of the bridge itself would create thousands of jobs, while ongoing growth in tourism, housing, and small business would continue long after the ribbon is cut. This is an investment that pays back, not just in dollars, but in opportunity, affordability, and Aussie pride.

Sign this petition to show that Australians want smart, future-focused infrastructure that connects communities, unlocks value, and prepares us for the decade ahead.
