Dear All,
It has been a while since the last update because I have been fervently trying to find a solution to an issue that has become more complicated than it should be.
As a fellow resident of Brickell and a passionate advocate for the welfare of all our community members, including our furry companions, I am reaching out to seek your valuable support in a pressing matter.
Enclosed with this message, you will find a letter that was sent earlier today to the Brickell Homeowners Association and key individuals in the Miami Government. This letter outlines our urgent plea to protect our cherished SouthSide Park and emphasizes the need for the establishment of more dog parks within our neighborhood.
In February 2023, I initiated the Brickell Dog Park Petition, driven by a genuine desire to enhance the quality of life for everyone in our community. However, despite persistent efforts to engage with Miami Commissioners Carollo and Covo, as well as Mayor Suarez, we have faced significant challenges, and our appeals have seemingly gone unheard.
The latest concern we've uncovered involves a proposed plan by a NY developer to encroach on SouthSide Park's green lawn, which accounts for over 50% of the overall park space. The developer intends to set up a temporary fire station on the park lawn, following the demolition of the existing station where they plan to build a new skyscraper that will partially stand on city property where the fire station exists today. This project is situated within District 3, led by Commissioner Carollo and his team, who are undoubtedly aware of the situation and allowing it to take place.
SouthSide Park holds immense importance as a green oasis and recreational hub for residents of all ages. It fosters a sense of community and serves as a sanctuary for tranquility and joy. However, its potential loss would be a significant blow to our environment and the community’s physical and emotional well-being.
I kindly request your support in urging the Miami Government to take proactive measures in three critical areas:
- Safeguard SouthSide Park from any potential encroachment or development that could compromise its integrity and purpose.
- Advocate for the proposed temporary fire station to be situated in a location that does not infringe upon the park's green space.
- Facilitate the creation of additional dog parks in Brickell, recognizing their significance in fostering a pet-friendly community and promoting social interactions among residents.
The presence of dog parks, akin to the ones found in various other areas such as Downtown Bayfront Park, Downtown Maurice Ferre Park, Edgewater Margaret Pace Park, Key Biscayne Village Green, Coconut Grove Blanche Park and Kennedy Park, Coral Gables Dog Park, West Kendall Dog Park, Midtown Paraíso Park, North Bay Village Dog Park, Miami Beach Flamingo Park, and Washington Ave. Bark Park, would not only encourage responsible pet ownership but also strengthen our sense of community and friendship among park visitors.
By uniting as a community, we can secure a vibrant and sustainable future for Brickell. Preserving our parks and green spaces holds enduring benefits for the well-being of both current and future generations.
Thank you for taking the time to read this message and consider our cause. Your endorsement (signing and sharing this petition) would undeniably fortify our efforts and demonstrate the unity and determination of our community.
With gratitude for your support, I remain optimistic that together, we can safeguard SouthSide Park and create a more pet-friendly and harmonious Brickell.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Gilfond
