Survivors of intimate partner violence are twice as likely to attempt suicide multiple times, he points out, and cases of murder-suicide are most likely to occur in the context of abuse. Sourced from https://www.apa.org/monitor/2014/11/suicide-violence
About 4,000 women die each year due to domestic violence. Of the total domestic violence homicides, about 75% of the victims were killed as they attempted to leave the relationship or after the relationship had ended. Sourced from https://domesticabuseshelter.org/domestic-violence
Up to 99% of domestic violence victims experience economic abuse during an abusive relationship, and finances are often cited as the biggest barrier to leaving an abusive relationship. Sourced from: https://ncadv.org/blog/posts/quick-guide-economic-and-financial-abuse
23.5% of divorces are caused by domestic violence. Almost a quarter of survey respondents reported physical and emotional abuse in their marriages as a critical cause of divorce. Sourced from https://gabriellehartley.com/3-kinds-of-divorce-statistics-you-can-learn-from/
We want free lawyers for Domestic violence Victims through the whole process of divorce, child custody, visitation and obtaining a domestic violence restraining order we want this in addition to the already implemented domestic violence advocacy centers. We want domestic violence to be seen as a heinous crime and a felony in the courts eyes to insure ours and our children's safty needs are met.
Domestic violence survivor's are being told that just because their spouse is violent towards them, It dosn't mean they will be violent towards the children. I personally was told this. I was forced to find my ex and live with him for two weeks to get him served a restraining order. I then had to force the sheriffs station to come serve him after my temporary restraing order was approved. My ex is an active addict who neglectfully left drugs, vape pens and weapons out for the children to get ahold of. I have bad PTSD that caused me to freeze up in court and go blank while giving my statement. The judge thankfully opted for supervised visitation and two phone calls a week through Talking Parents. My case and many others could go so much better if we had a lawyer to help us through the paperwork, serving documents and representing us in court. (Things such as court orderd classes and drug testing are not being ordered which should be mandatory steps if theres evidence of drug abuse, alcohol abuse and or domestic violence.) We have no protection or help aside from an advocate sitting silently by our side in court and a self help attorney that is rarely available to help fill out paperwork. This is putting children in dangerous situations, not having proper representation to insure ours and our children's safety needs are met. Having a lawyer for divorce in domestic violence situations could change everything for domestic violence survivor's! This man could honestly get unsupervised visitation. We could potentially loose our home to him.How many more children need to be put in danger? How many more victims need to be left in financial devistation? Immediate action needs to be taken to insure children of domestic violence situations are protected! This is a nation wide issue victims are not receiving the support they need. Domestic violence against a partner should be seen as a heinous crime and should be a felony in the courts eyes sign my petition to help stop this injustice.
I believe that if there were proper representation in court and if domestic violence were viewed as a felony and terrorism against a domestic partner more victims would leave the situation and less offenders would commit the crime.
