Our community is still reeling from the tragic loss of 17-year-old Bradley Ellertson, a beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew, friend, godson, classmate and athlete. His untimely death on January 26th 2024 has left a void that can never be filled. We stand with Krystal Stone and Aaron Ellertson in their quest for a law in his honor- Bradley’s Law.
Bradley's life was cut short due to a car crash. On January 26, 2024 at 8:52 a 16 yr old female driver was speeding on county road 196 in Molino Fl. Bradley was the front passenger and another passenger was in the back seat. She drove past a yeild sign, 4 sets of rumble strips, and drove into traffic on highway 29 and into the fuel tank of a semi truck. Bradley was killed at the scene. The back passenger almost died. The driver of the Kia refused a drug/alcohol screen and a statement to police. Her cell phone was never searched, and her car was released by FHP just 4 days after the crash without being searched. The scene was never secured by FHP even with a power line down and fuel leaking from the semitruck. FHP did not interview anyone from the sheriff, EMS, Fire, bystanders or anyone who called 911. A supervisor was never called to the scene. The semitruck driver was also never tested for drugs or Alcohol by FHP. The only person tested for drugs and alcohol was Bradley, the passenger. The Medical Examiner’s Office didn’t show up to the scene to investigate or take pictures. Bradley was left on the ground for hours without even a call to his mother. Then his mother was not allowed to see Bradley, identify Bradley, or touch Bradley for six days until he was finally released to the funeral home. The girl who was driving was only given two tickets and lost her license for 6 months. (Ten months later) The judge didn’t even give her community service or mention Bradley’s death or the back passenger’s near death.
This inaction by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) and the judicial system raises serious concerns about the value they place on young lives. Our community deserves protection from unaccountable individuals who continue to drive, potentially endangering more children.
We are calling for standardized DUI/Drug testing in vehicle homicides, standard protocols to be implemented and followed by FHP in cases of severe car crashes and homicides. The absence of such procedures currently leaves room for inconsistencies and potential miscarriages of justice. In addition to this reform, we also seek accountability from FHP officers involved in these investigations.
Due to the rising number of accidents at this intersection, we request that FDOT and FHP investigate the causes of these frequent collisions. Based on their findings, we ask the county to install either a flashing stop sign or traffic lights at the intersection. Additionally, we suggest the county consider reducing the speed limit to 45 mph on county road 196 and further lowering it on Highway 29 near the intersection.
Our group, found athttps://justiceforbradley.com https://www.facebook.com/groups/justiceforbradley serves as a hub for sharing facts, information, and updates related to the events leading to Bradley's untimely death. In memory of Bradley and in support of his loved ones, we advocate for driving with caution, raising awareness about the dangers of speeding, and addressing issues within the law and investigative process.
It's time we demand change. Our community deserves to feel safe and trust that law enforcement agencies like FHP take crimes seriously. By signing this petition you are not only demanding justice for Bradley but also contributing towards making our roads safer places where such tragedies are less likely to occur again.
Please sign this petition today as we strive towards achieving justice for Bradley Ellertson and implementing necessary safety reforms within our local law enforcement agencies.
Additional Points:
Florida Statute 316.1932 states that a person who accepts the privilege of operating a motor vehicle is deemed to have given consent to submit to an approved chemical or physical test if lawfully arrested for any offense allegedly committed while driving.
We believe that when serious bodily injury or death occurs due to a traffic incident, probable cause is established, justifying mandatory testing and comprehensive investigation, similar to the legal standards applied in other contexts.
