Boycott Purina Hall of Fame and Transfer Wildlife Incidents to Animal Services in Ontario

As someone who loves all animals, I am very upset that Purina nominated Chloe, a dog who attacked a terrified black bear who was murdered by police instead of being rescued. The dog was let off leash into.the backyard at 11pm, and the bear entered the home to escape the dog. The poor bear was not attacking anyone when he or she was shot. Please do not continue to demonize wildlife. Cases of negative wildlife encounters that result in the destruction of animals should be disqualified by Purina. Most negative encounters with bears are actually instigated by dogs. The bear probably entered the home to escape the dog.
Please show compassion to all animals and disqualify Chloe, or at least change the Purina Hall of Fame policy next year to disqualify animals involved in wildlife conflict. Until then, this Purina Hall of Fame is nothing more than the Purina Hall of Shame.

In Nipigon, Ontario, a bear was shot simply for "growling" and "charging" which is a bluff charge. No human was hurt, but police shot the bear because they wouldn't leave. The reason they would not leave was they lived there.

The next week, a bear wandered into a family home in a truly distressing series of events. As the family opened their door to let out the family dog, a bear, startled and confused, entered the home. The ensuing chaos led to the bear, terrified by the frenzied barking of the dog, mildly injuring two people and the dog. In a bid to protect their territory and the family, the dog chased the bear into the basement, cornering the already scared animal until the police arrived.
Hunters have written a lot of garbage about the bear recently, who was NOT trying to eat people or dogs. The bear was hungry, but they were trying to eat the people's food, not the people nor the dog!
What followed next was a heartbreaking result of mismanagement and lack of proper resources. The police, not equipped nor trained to handle such wildlife disturbances, arrived at the scene and shot the bear — an action that many deem unnecessary and tragic. The needless loss of life could have been avoided if the situation were handled differently. Nipigon needs to develop an Animal Shelter. Animal Services should be empowered with the tools and personnel to manage these types of situations. We advocate for the adoption of a protocol that diverts all wildlife and animal emergency calls to Animal Services. This dedicated department should have the resources, including 24/7 access to tranquilizers, to humanely and effectively manage unexpected animal encounters.
Moreover, training for potential bear encounters and education for residents in bear-prone areas would help de-escalate such situations in the future. Simply leaving doors open to allow the bear to leave and not cornering the animal could have allowed the bear to exit safely, proving fatal action was unnecessary.
It's high time for a systematic change that prevents such tragic outcomes and ensures the safety of both human and animal lives. We are calling on local government officials to review and revise current protocols, ensuring all wildlife responses involve trained Animal Services professionals rather than police officers.
