Boycott Amazon in San Juan County

Boycott Amazon in San Juan County
The Issue
Why Boycott Amazon in San Juan County?
- Local businesses need our support, employ local people, and make our community vibrant.
- Money spent here stays here.
- Amazon's expansion to the islands has negatively impacted local businesses, USPS, and the ferries.
- Amazon exploits workers in the US and abroad.
- Amazon busts unions.
- Amazon mines our personal data for profit.
- Amazon Web Services provides the computing infrastructure for ICE, the Department of Defense, the IDF, private prisons, government surveillance systems, and more.
- Amazon does not pay its fair share in taxes.
- Amazon is a monopoly.
- Billionaires shouldn’t exist and we should not be giving them more money.
What We Are Calling For
We are calling for a county-wide sustained boycott on Amazon and its subsidiary companies. If you are ready to do this, you can make a pledge to boycott at various levels. We understand that committing to a full boycott of Amazon may be difficult. If you are considering participating in this boycott but aren't sure how to fully break up with Amazon, you can take incremental steps.
We would also like to encourage everyone in our community to take a moment to reflect on the idea that it is too hard to boycott Amazon. Perhaps this sentiment has been manufactured by Amazon themselves! Perhaps practicing alternative purchasing methods will help us realize that it actually isn't so impossible.
It’s Time to Break Up with Amazon. Here’s How.
Pledges
- I pledge to stop purchasing goods from amazon.com
- I pledge to mend, repair, and upcycle things when I can, give and trade with my fellow islanders, shop for things I need at the thrift store, etc.
- I pledge to shop local when possible and practice harm reduction when choosing to shop corporate.
- I pledge to cancel my Amazon Prime account.
- I pledge to use alternative services for e-books and audiobooks.
- I pledge to boycott Amazon's subsidiary companies (Whole Foods, Twitch, Audible, Alexa, etc)
