The Issue

Due to recent round of laid offs at WGN, WPIX and KTLA. Nexstar Media Group, the largest local television station operator in the United States, controls a massive portion of the American media landscape. With 199 full-power stations in 116 markets and affiliations with CBS, ABC, NBC, FOX, The CW, and more, Nexstar wields significant influence over the information reaching millions of American homes. Despite the size and reach of its broadcasting network, Nexstar's corporate practices have raised concerns about their impact on local journalism, media diversity, and consumer choice.

One of the most troubling issues is the consolidation of media ownership, which limits independent voices and reduces diverse viewpoints in news reporting. According to the Pew Research Center, a few large corporations own the majority of media outlets, curbing free press and pluralism. Nexstar, by acquiring more stations, contributes to this alarming trend, potentially shaping public opinion unilaterally.

In addition to consolidation, Nexstar has been criticized for prioritizing profit over public service, often resulting in the reduction of local content in favor of more syndicated programming. This shift not only undermines local journalism but also leaves communities less informed about issues directly impacting them. The Society of Professional Journalists has highlighted the importance of local reporting in fostering informed and engaged citizens. Without it, democracy is weakened.

Moreover, Nexstar’s practice of blackouts during carriage disputes with cable and satellite providers means viewers often lose access to their favorite programs, affecting millions annually. These interruptions, used as bargaining chips, dissuade consumers and erode trust in broadcasters. According to the American Television Alliance, such disputes have caused over 230 channel blackouts in recent years, disrupting loyal viewers' access to news and entertainment.

We, therefore, call upon media consumers to boycott all Nexstar stations as a stand against corporate consolidation, in support of independent media, and in favor of quality local journalism. This boycott advocates for diversity in media and the preservation of free and varied news sources, essential pillars of our democratic society.

It is time to hold Nexstar accountable for their corporate decisions affecting our communities, local journalism, and freedom of information. Join us as we demand change. Sign this petition to signal to Nexstar and other major media conglomerates that the public demands a restoration of media integrity, local news importance, and diverse reporting. Together, we can make a difference.
