There has never been a more important time to defend our right to vote and the freedoms that are the foundation of our democracy.
The events of this week make it all the more clear, that we must hold this government to account for the #DeniedMyVote scandal.
Can you chip in £5, £10, or £20 to help fund this important campaign?
Baroness Hale, President of the Supreme Court said of the Prime Minister's illegal decision to shut down parliament that:
"the effect on the fundamentals of our democracy was extreme"
The same can be said of the systematic disenfranchisement of over 1 million EU citizens and Britons abroad from the European elections.
We are continuing to call for a public inquiry into #DeniedMyVote and to appeal to the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Council of Europe's Venice Commission to conduct a full inquiry.
We must also make sure #DeniedMyVote can never happen again.
EU27 citizens currently have the right to vote in local elections, rights that are anchored in UK law.
But a government that can systematically disenfranchise over 1 million votes in European elections is more than capable of denying EU citizens the right to vote in local elections if the UK leaves the EU.
That's why it is vital to make sure that all the political parties are called on to include a commitment to safeguard the voting rights of EU citizens in their manifestos for the next election.
We also want to see a commitment from all parties to the abolition of the 15 year rule, which stops long term overseas residents voting in the UK.
Today we secured an important advance.
At the end of its conference in Brighton, the Labour Party voted not just to maintaining the voting rights of EU citizens in local elections but also to extending these rights to general elections as well.
Labour vows to give EU nationals vote in UK elections
The Liberal Democrats have committed to giving the franchise to EU citizens who have lived in the UK for more than 5 years.
The Green Party believes that voting rights should be based on residency not nationality.
We now need to make sure that the Conservative party follows suit.
EU citizens need certainty about their rights and status post Brexit.
Assuring EU citizens they will be able to continue to participate in local in the UK is an essential part of making sure they feel included.
Abolishing the 15 year rule can start to make up for the hurt and damage caused to all British residents abroad, many of whom were not able to vote as a result of the late arrival of postal ballots.
To take this campaign forward, we need your help.
