Would you send your child to a school where they don’t teach English?

11 million people in the UK are deaf or hard of hearing and it is estimated that around 151,000 people in the UK alone use BSL as their main form of communication and first language. Due to BSL not being in the national curriculum and not being mandatory in schools these people are excluded from communication.

How would you feel if you couldn’t communicate with your friends and family?

In the past few years many deaf schools have been forced to close in the UK, meaning that many deaf children are now being taught in mainstream schools, with no way to communicate with teachers or peers. If hearing children were offered the opportunity to learn BSL at school, deaf children would have better access to education and communicating with their peers.

In the UK, over 1 million children and young people alone, that’s 2-3 in every UK classroom, have some form of long term and persistent speech, language and communication difficulty which could be helped by using British Sign Language as an alternative form of communication.
