Mexico is currently home to approximately 30 swim with dolphin programs and according to the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, "Mexico's cetacean captivity industry has been one of the fastest growing in the world, particularly with the development of swim with dolphins programs in tourist areas. Many dolphins have been captured in Mexican waters for public display in the increasing number of facilities holding these animals for shows and interactive programs and even traveling circuses." In Quintana Roo, Mexico, the Barceló Maya Beach Resort contains a swim with dolphin program called Dolphinaris Barceló. This Dolphinarium belongs to a chain of seven swim with dolphin programs located in Mexico and Arizona, owned by Ventura Entertainment Arizona, LLC.
This February The Barceló Maya Resort will be hosting Los Muertos con Queso where Dead and Company will be playing three nightly concerts. Last year Bob Weir, of Dead and Company, worked with the Resort to cancel all dolphin shows during the duration of the concert. We appreciate these efforts; however, if we want to put an end to dolphin exploitation for human entertainment, we cannot continue to support the very resorts that condone this behavior.
We are asking Dead and Company to help take a stand against the cruelty that takes place at this resort. Please do not use Barceló Maya Resort, or any other dolphin swim resort, as a venue for concerts until they put an end to dolphin captivity!
